Rules and description of domain name searches

With help of The Swedish Internet Foundation's contact search service, you can find information about the domain name you were looking for. The feature is intended to look up information about specific domain names and its holders and retrieve the results from the WHOIS protocol.

Contact search

The result of contact searches on internetstiftelsen.se may not be used for commercial purposes. Downloading information about several domain names in order to set up your own database is not allowed

All searches are logged with information about from where the search was made. If there are too many searches on a contact ID, the IP address behind it is blocked from further searching

The following rules apply to contact ID searches:

  • Daytime (08:00 - 17:00): 10 searches per hour
  • Other times (17.00 - 08.00): 5 searches per hour

Correcting incomplete or incorrect contact information

If you believe that the contact information for a particular contact is incomplete or incorrect, you can contact us at registry@internetstiftelsen.se. We will then check the information and request a correction if required. If, on the other hand, you want to update your own contact information shown in WHOIS (see more info below), you should first contact your reseller (registrar) and request a correction. If you are unsure which reseller you have, you can easily use the search function below.

Find your customer service

The Swedish Internet Foundation has no common customer service for domain name holders. For questions about a registered domain name, contact the customer service at your current retailer. To get the contact information, enter your domain name below and click on "Search".

Results are retrieved from WHOIS

The result of contact searches on internetstiftelsen.se is taken from the WHOIS protocol, which is a web and terminal based tool to find registration details for a .se or .nu domain name. For example, it may be when the domain was registered and which registrar the domain is under.

The Swedish Internet Foundation's main purpose with WHOIS is to provide information on holders and contact persons to ensure the administration and technical operation of the .se and .nu top-level domains, taking personal privacy into account. It is also a tool to find out if a domain name is available for registration or not.

The results may not be used for commercial purposes. The function is intended to look up information about specific .se and .nu domain names and their holders. Downloading information about several domain names to set up your own database is not allowed.

All searches are logged with information about from where the search was made. If there are too many searches on a contact ID, the IP address behind it is blocked from further searching.

Free - is the domain name available?

Free is a web-based search tool that is used to find out if a domain name is available or not. Given a search string, Free responds with "occupied" or "free" depending on whether the domain name is registered or not.

You can reach the .se domain tool at the following link: http://free.iis.se/free?q=example.se where you replace "example.se" with the domain you want to check. Similarly, you can use http://free.iis.nu/free?q=example.nu to control .nu domains.

The "Free" tool is identical to the DAS (Domain Availability Service) service, which is also provided by other Registry agencies.

Terms and restrictions

  • Maximum number of questions per second and user is 34.
  • A user will be cut off at more than 34 questions per second. The user must stop submitting queries for 1 second before the lock is canceled and can then continue to use the service. If the user does not stop submitting queries, the block time will be increased.

Processing of personal data

If you are a domain name holder, you will find information on how The Swedish Internet Foundation deals with your personal data in the Registration Terms applicable to the top-level domains .se and .nu, point 9:

Privacy Policy

The Swedish Internet Foundation's privacy policy describes how we treat the information that domain name holders submit in connection with the registration of .se and .nu domain names.
